Green Gardens

The perfect weekend requires the right amount of relaxation and adventure with the ones you love. My husband and I live in New York City and whenever we feel a bit bogged down with work we like to escape the city for a few days. One of my favorite spots is Connecticut. There are so many quaint towns with waterfront coffee shops all just a short drive from Manhattan.

When we head to Connecticut we love to stop and have brunch at the Terrain Cafe in Westport. I enjoy browsing around their extensive shop for new home goods or garden finds. Terrain is located in the heart of Westport and is a great destination to kick off an afternoon, or a weekend, away. Check out a few brunch pics and shots of some items that will enhance your gardening game:

The Bloody Mary's at the Cafe are so delicious that the drive for just one is well worth it! If you can't travel to Westport every time you crave a Bloody Mary, then I suggest you hop over to our shop and order their mix. The mason jars are a nice touch, and the bar of fixins is also a great idea for a weekend of hosting & toasting at home.

In addition to the killer brunch served in their romantic garden cafe, Terrain offers many treasures for both your garden and home.

Beautiful Table Setting with Potted Plants and Moss  |  Design by @whatfionafinds  |  Photo: @serena_fresson

When entertaining, in lieu of flowers, consider decorating with a variety of plants as seen above. Below are a few of my favorite plants to decorate with:

Myrtles are very popular this year, and rightly so! However, be warned, they are a lot of work.

Myrtles

Let the experts at Terrain help you select the perfect trio of myrtles to sit on your breakfast table, your mantle, or next to your hearth. I learned the following lessons about care for my myrtles that has served me well:

1. Select a well-sized pot with a drain and cover the top of the soil with moss

2. Keep this plant out of direct sunlight in the summer time. Sun in the winter months is ok. Filtered sunlight is ideal but will tolerate low levels of direct sunlight.
3. Administer mild liquid fertilizer once every two to three weeks.

4. Water thoroughly, keeping the soil moist at all times. Do not put above fireplace or near heaters. (The plant will dry out quickly.)

5. Trim to maintain shape with sharp scissors.

6. Name it; they like that : )

Lemon Ferns

Lemon ferns are another excellent choice (see the shop page for my favorite) and succulents make sophisticated table runners and are very low maintenance.
